Ask to Become a Guardian for an Adult

If an adult cannot make certain decisions or manage their own affairs, you may be able to ask a Nevada court to appoint a guardian. A guardian is someone the court gives legal authority to make decisions about the adult’s personal care, finances, or both.

  • You do not have to be related to the adult to ask to become their guardian.
  • One person may ask to serve as guardian, or two people may apply together as co-guardians.
  • Nevada has requirements for who can serve as a guardian. The judge decides whether a guardianship is needed and who is suitable to serve.
  • If the adult needs immediate protection, a temporary guardianship process may be more appropriate.
